This list of our favorite campsites was compiled early in 2026 from our notes and our memories.

Arizona
Burro Creek Campground
Wikieup, AZ
10/20-10/21 2023, Site 11, Photo
Connections: none; water spigots, dump station
Burro Creek was a pleasant surprise. We stopped for a convenient overnight en route to Tuscon from Boulder City, NV. On a Thursday night, in mid October, we had it practically to ourselves. It was very quiet and peaceful at the time of our visit. We enjoyed the labeled desert plants in a small garden area and a short hike to a sandy beach along the creek. The night sky was spectacular here. Although there are no utility connections at the sites, water is available and there is a dump station.
Gilbert Ray Campground
Tuscon, AZ
10/21-10/24 2023, Site 13C, Photo
Connections: electricity; water spigots, dump station
We had heard good things about Gilbert Ray and it did not disappoint. We enjoyed camping among tall saguaros, beautiful sunsets, and listening to howling coyotes at night. Very convenient to Saguaro National Park and the Desert Museum. We were also fortunate to get a breakfast at Coyote Pause Cafe before their recent closure.
Mather Campground
Grand Canyon Nat'l Park, South Rim
10/22-10/25 2024, Site 88, Photo
Connections: none; water spigots, dump station
We've been to Mather many times before this, but not with Millie. It's always a good experience and mid to late October is a perfect time visit. It was cold enough to enjoy a campfire in the evenings.
Sunset View Campground
Navajo National Monument
10/4-10/7 2025, Site 19, Photo
Connections: none; water spigots, gray water flush (service sink) at restrooms
Navajo National Monument is spectacular and Sunset View Campground is definitely among our favorites. Our visit was just a few days into a government shutdown. Although the Monument and the Campground were open, the visitor's center and all other services were closed. During our stay, the 30-site campground was, at most, only half occupied. Remarkably, this campground is free (no charge). Offloaded gray water to flush recepticale. Dumped black water at Lone Rock Beach, our next stop. Could have dumped in Page (75 mi).
California
Fallen Leaf Campground
Lake Tahoe, CA
9/28-10/1 2023, Site 146, Photo
Connections: none; water spigots, dump station
Very nice campground in a beautiful area, from which we toured the Lake Tahoe area. There's a nice walk from the campground to Fallen Leaf Lake, which is pretty spectacular. It would have been a perfect place for kayaking, but we didn't have it with us. The bear that strolled through our campsite (photo) may have also been responsible for muddy bear prints on our truck. We camped here on the eve of a potential government shutdown, which was averted at the last minute.
Hat Creek Campground
Old Station, CA
9/25-9/26 2023
Connections: none; water spigots, dump station
We retreated to a campsite at Hat Creek to avoid smoke from controlled burning at Manzanita Lake Campground. It was a nice find and, in some ways, preferable to Manzanita Lake.
Jumbo Rocks Campground
Joshua Tree Nat'l Park
10/22-10/25 2025, Site 81, Photo
Connections: none; no water
This is dry camping; we had to bring your own water. Parking for site 81 is a wide spot in road, barely long enough for our truck and trailer. Had to set up strategically to accommodate both vehicles, without blocking the road, and have the trailer door open to the campsite. Otherwise, 81 is a great site, with a large gravel area nestled against the rocks, which provide some shade. Climb the rocks for views of the surrounding landscape. It's a nice hike to Skull Rock from the campground. Easy access to other trails in the park. Our site was far enough away from the pit toilets to avoid the unpleasant odor. Dumped at Cottonwood campground on the way out of the park (south entrance).
Kirk Creek Campground
Big Sur, CA
10/9-10/12 2023, Site 22, Photo
Connections: none; no water
This is dry camping; we had to bring our own water. Site 22 is known as one of the nicest sites in the campground. It's a beautiful spot with unobstructed views of the ocean and a large tree for shade. It's a short hike, with some steep sections, from the campground down to the rocky beach. There's also a nice hike starting from a trailhead directly across the road. The campground is small and rather old, but is well maintained. No cell service (T-Mobile), but found some a few miles south. Gas in area was extremely expensive. Dumped at San Simeon, 40 miles south.
At the time of our visit, the coastal highway was closed just a mile north of the campground making it a very quiet and ideal visit with very little traffic.
Manzanita Lake Campground
Lassen Volcanic National Park
9/26-9/28 2023, Site B44, Photo
Connections: none; water spigots, dump station
We were here just a few days before the campground was scheduled close for the winter, yet there was a large controlled burn adjacent to our loop. We retreated to Hat Creek Campground for our 1st night, due to the smoke. Many others also chose to leave.
Our back-in site was very short and unlevel, but we managed. Otherwise, this is a nice campground, in a beautiful forested area, and is well located for access to the rest of the park.
Gas at the camp store (campground entrance) is the cheapest in the area. No cell service (T-Mobile) at the campground, but managed to find it just a short ways down the road.
Tuttle Creek Campground
Lone Pine, CA
10/3-10/8 2023, Site 19; 10/13-10/15 2023, Site 19; 10/19-10/22 2025, Site 19, Photo1, Photo2
Connections: none; water spigots, dump station
Tuttle Creek is as first-come-first-served campground with water spigots and a dump station and SPECTACULAR views of the high Sierra (Mount Whitney). Considering its remote location, cell service (T-Mobile) was pretty good. At the time of our initial visit, Whitney Portal Road was closed, which made for challenging access. We enjoyed our visits to Lone Pine and to Alabama Hills, which are just short drives. Hung out here, waiting for Death Valley to reopen on October 15, 2023, after an extended park-wide closure.
